Shonen Jump’s Biggest New Anime Hit Enters Netflix Top 10 With 4.3 Million Views

Major Shonen Jump-based series Dandadan has made a big splash on Netflix after its critically acclaimed anime premiere. The sci-fi supernatural action series ranked in the top 10 most-watched list on Netflix, defeating the anime reboot of Ranma 1/2.

Netflix shared official data of its top 10 non-English shows for the week of Oct. 7-13, 2024. Dandadan came in second place with 4.3 million views. It was beaten only by Deceitful Love, the Italian miniseries that received 9.6 million views the same week. In fifth place was the 2024 anime reboot of Ranma 1/2 by studio MAPPA, with 2.5 million views in total.

Dandadan Debuts on Netflix’s Top 10 in Smash-Hit Streaming Debut

Although Dandadan failed to claim the top spot, its debut at #2 on Netflix’s weekly most-watched list is impressive, especially since it outperformed the eagerly anticipated reboot of Rumiko Takahashi’s Ranma 1/2. Additionally, Dandadan is available on other streaming services, like Crunchyroll and Hulu. Even more impressive is that the first three anime episodes aired in theaters during its limited theatrical run in September, which — just like the Look Back anime movie — received more screenings after overperforming at the box office.

However, North American viewers aren’t the only ones raving about Dandadan. Japanese Niconico viewers rated Dandadan #1 in its top 10 most popular Fall 2024 anime rankings. The romantic sports drama Blue Box was #2, The iDOLM@STER Shiny Colors Season 2 at #3, 2.5 Dimensional Seduction at #4 and Re:Zero: Starting Life in Another World Season 3 at #5 — although Re:Zero fans shouldn’t feel too bad about its placement, as it’s currently MAL’s top-rated isekai anime). Critics are also singing the praises of Dandadan, declaring it one of the best anime premieres of 2024.

Studio Ghibli Distributor Just Got Bought Out By JJK’s Anime Producer

The anime industry is rocked following Toho’s acquisition of American film distributor GKIDS, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toho International.

Written and illustrated by Yukinobu Tatsu, Dandadan follows Momo Ayase and Ken “Okarun” Takakura as they try to disprove their respective obsessions with extraterrestrials and the supernatural, only to realize their surreal interests are, in fact, real. At a time when Shonen Jump is waving goodbye to its biggest hits this year, like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen, a lot has been riding on the animated adaptation of Dandadan since its initial announcement in November 2023. Thankfully for the Japanese manga publisher, fans and critics are celebrating the anime adaptation by Science Saru, the prestigious animation studio that previously worked on Devilman Crybaby and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

It may come as no surprise that following Dandadan‘s critical and commercial success in North America, Toho Animation — which owns Science Saru — acquired GKIDS, the indie film and TV distributor behind the series’ English release. The New York City-based distributor handles Studio Ghibli’s animated filmography and recently released Look Back in theaters.
