10 Anime Characters Who Share MHA Dabi’s English Voice Actor

My Hero Academia’s Dabi, revealed to be Toya Todoroki in season 6 of the series, is one of the most intricately crafted and well-written villains in anime. He is the League of Villains’ frontrunner in firepower and brutality, known for his anger and spite against a hero-worshipping society (and a father) that has wronged him and so many others.

Dabi is beloved for his insanity and complexity, and part of what makes his character come alive for Western anime fans is his English voice actor. Jason Liebrecht perfectly translates the essence of Dabi’s character into English. And, as a voice-acting veteran with an impressive vocal range, Liebrecht has been able to do the same with numerous well-known anime characters in the span of his career.

Is Dabi a More Interesting Villain Than Shigaraki?

While Shigaraki undoubtedly serves as a powerful and imposing primary antagonist in My Hero Academia, I’ve always felt that Toya Todoroki (a.k.a. Dabi) offers a more complex and engaging villainous archetype. His backstory, revealed in a shocking and climactic moment, was an unexpected twist, a character long believed to be dead turns out to be alive and what’s worse groomed to become a vengeful villain. Dabi’s personal vendetta against heroism and more importantly his own family creates a more focused and relatable character arc compared to Shigaraki’s broader, apocalyptic goals. There’s more of a grounding narrative here that feels more accessible and relatable because of the fact that it centers around a family dealing with the sins of the past. But what are your thoughts? Do you believe that Dabi is a more interesting villain than Shigaraki?

10 Sohei Fujii is a Wolf Girl’s Childhood Sweetheart

Wolf Children Gives Liebrecht his “Youngest” Role

Sohei Fujii talks to Yuki in the anime film, Wolf Children.

Sohei Fujii is a major supporting character from the 2012 Studio Chizu film known as Wolf Children, a fantasy drama directed by Mamoru Hosada. It is about a woman named Hana who falls in love with a werewolf-type being with whom she has two children, Ame and Yuki. After her lover dies, Hana ends up having to face the challenges of raising two young wolf children on her own.

Sohei is the boy who ends up seeing Yuki in a partially transformed wolf state after she accidentally injures him with her claws—a truth that he chooses to hide even when questioned by his own mother. This becomes the catalyst of his and Yuki’s growing friendship. Liebrecht’s performance perfectly captures Sohei’s curiosity and boyish nonchalance towards his ever-changing surroundings, making the character truly feel like a child who has resolved to simply take the world in stride as he grows up.

9 Hugh Mercury is a Supportive Scoundrel

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale Turns Liebrecht into a Sweet Mentor

Hugh Mercury from Sugar Apple Fairy Tale

Hugh Mercury is one of the many Silver Sugar confectioners of Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, a 2023 Shojo fantasy about a girl named Ann Halford who strives to follow in her late mother’s footsteps in becoming a Silver Sugar Master. Mercury is known as the Viscount of Silver Sugar and is the one who helps Ann prove her worth during her first competition after she was betrayed by Jonas Anders. Jason Liebrecht gives this sincere character a warm and jovial tone to match the guardian-like attitude that Mercury has towards those who are aspiring to master the art of Silver Sugar confections—a craft in which he, himself, was once a novice.

Why Baccano! Should Be on Every Anime Watchlist

Baccano! is memorable for its inventive blend of Prohibition-era crime and supernatural thrills, but what else makes it an anime watchlist staple?

Luck is a young and handsome man who carries himself with a practiced composure and a suave demeanor that Liebrecht perfectly captures with the smooth and slightly accented tone typical of a 1930’s New York hearthtrob. It gives off the feeling that the character has everything in his life put together. However, in actuality, Luck is only trying to live up to the expectations of a proper mafioso, as many people around him doubt that he is able to handle a life of organized crime.

7 Qrow Branwen is the Scythe-Weilding Drunk Uncle

Liebrecht Took Over as the Famous Uncle Qrow in RWBY

Qrow Branwen brandishing his sword on his shoulder and smirking.

Qrow Branwen is known as the lovable deadbeat uncle of the RWBY series by Monty Oum. Although RWBY is a Western animation by the American entertainment company known as Rooster Teeth, it is heavy with anime influence, which can especially be seen in the show’s art style. The story is centered around characters that were inspired by classic fairytales, such as Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White, as they fight against dark creatures called “Grimm” and the evil forces that control them.

Qrow is the uncle to main protagonist Ruby Rose and her older sister, Yang Xiao Long. Initially perceived as a drunkard with little respect for authority, Qrow turns out to be a complicated character who just loves his nieces dearly and simply wants to keep them safe from harm. Liebrecht took up the mantle as Qrow’s voice actor in seasons 7-9 of RWBY, expertly mimicking Vic Mignogna’s vocal persona of a man who is trying his best to get his life together for family’s sake.

6 Lavi Bookman Puts up a Friendly Front

Liebrecht was Lavi in D.Gray Man’s Original Anime

Lavi Bookman from D.Gray-Man anime series

Lavi is one of the main characters of D. Gray-Man, which was a massively popular 2006 anime series based on the hit manga by Katsura Hoshino. It is about a young man named Allen Walker, who is training to become an exorcist to save the suffering souls trapped inside the deadly Akuma—created by the evil “Millenium Earl”—that have been wreaking havoc across the world.

Lavi is the chosen successor of the Bookman Clan as well as an exorcist of the Black Order. Although Lavi has a tendency to be quite strange and silly, most of the personality he shows to others is actually a facade to keep himself from becoming too attached to the people around him. Jason Liebrecht gives him a very easy-going tone of voice that rises to meet Lavi’s more comedic moments and dips down to suit the occasional and more serious drama surrounding the character.

5 Yato Knows That he was Meant for Greater Things

Noragami Makes Liebrecht into a Penny-Pinching Money God

Yato is one of the main protagonists of Noragami, a 2014 Studio Bones anime about a young and very obscure god who strives to be a mightier deity with millions of worshippers. Unfortunately, without a single shrine dedicated to his name and the loss of his weapon partner, Yato’s dreams are an impossible distance away—that is, until a girl named Hiyori Iki is hit by a car.

Yato might seem pretty care-free, but there’s more to him than that. Here’s what most fans don’t know about him.

Yato is a minor deity who desires to become a God of Fortune. He appears to be close to Hiyori’s age, but he is actually estimated to be over a thousand years old, as he was formerly a God of Calamity. Yato can be quite immature and unpredictable, exemplifying the attitude of the young man he appears to be, and Liebrecht does an excellent job of giving his voice that youthful undertone to portray an aspiring god who is trying to find his way.

4 Finnian is the Doe-Eyed Protector of the Phantomhives

Black Butler Gives Liebrecht an Excuse to Test out his British Accent

Finnian, the Phantomehive gardener, smiles from the Black Butler anime

Finnian is a major recurring character in the long-running anime and manga series Black Butler, created by Yana Toboso. The story follows young Ciel Phantomhive, who carries on the secret duty as the Queen’s Watchdog in the wake of his parents’ untimely deaths, taking care of the odd and unsettling crimes that occur around England. Ciel may be a child, but he is not one to be trifled with, especially with that mysterious butler at his beck and call.

Finnian, or “Finny,” is the bright-eyed gardener of the Phantomhive estate who possesses a pure heart alongside a brute strength that allows him to easily uproot a tree and swing it around like a bat. He is Liebrecht’s most surprising role thus far, as no one would have guessed that the man who voices this sweet English cinnamon roll is the very same actor who portrays the deadly and dangerous Dabi of My Hero Academia.

3 Robb Lucci is the Cat with the Sharpest Claws

Liebrecht Walked with Lucci so That he Could Run with Dabi

Rob Lucci is pictured from the neck up looking downward with Hattori perched on his shoulder.

Robb Lucci is one of the many villains in the mainstream shonen anime One Piece, one of the longest-running series to date with 1,128 manga chapters (making up 109 volumes), 1,121 anime episodes, and 15 movies. The series is still ongoing; however, creator Eiichiro Oda announced back in April that he plans to conclude the manga in late 2024 or early 2025 after an almost 30-year run.

Rob Lucci, wielder of the “Cat-Cat” Fruit’s power, is an agent of CP0, the strongest unit within Cipher Pol. He is an especially fearsome adversary for those unfortunate enough to cross his path, as he was a major antagonist for several arcs within the One Piece series. Of all of Jason’s Liebrecht’s villain roles, his performance as Rob Lucci is the one that sounds most similar to the unhinged Toya Todoroki, with a subtly raspy voice that resonates in a coolly domineering manner.

2 Larcade Dragneel Shares Dabi’s Unfortunate Fate

Liebrecht Makes Larcade into Another Example of his Amazing Vocal Range

Larcade Dragneel is one of the Spriggan 12 of the Alvarez Empire, a nation within the story of Fairy Tail, a 2013 anime about a girl named Lucy Heartfilia and her aspirations to become a renowned wizard of the famous guild known as Fairy Tail. After successfully entering the guild thanks to her encounter with Natsu Dragneel, Lucy forms bonds closer than family as she and her team of friends complete quest after quest.

Larcade, as a member of an elite unit that serves directly under the emperor of the Alvarez Empire, is an incredibly powerful wizard of the Spriggan 12; however, in spite of his power and talent, he was neglected by his father in favor of another—which might hit a bit close to home for fans of Dabi. Liebrecht’s voice as the serene and beautiful Larcade is calm, honeyed, and slightly sassy, quite different from his other roles, but it comes as no surprise, given the actor’s range.

1 Zeke Jeager is the Last Beast Titan

Liebrecht Lends his Voice to Another Battle-Hardened Villain

Zeke Jeager is a major character in Attack on Titan, a series created by Hajime Isayama, which concluded with its fourth season back in November 2023. In short, Attack on Titan is about the remnants of humanity forced to live within a walled-off civilization in order to thrive in a world overtaken with massive, man-eating creatures called “Titans.” However, as the plot unfolds, the secrets of humans and Titans grow more complex and jarring.

Zeke is the older half-brother of main protagonist Eren Jeager and was the last to inherit the power of the Beast Titan. Zeke has shown himself to be an intelligent man aside from being a cold and ruthless killer, though, by the end of his story, he realizes the atrocities he’s committed and accepts his death at Levi Ackerman’s hands. Jason Liebrecht expertly ages up his voice to encompass the heavy burden on Zeke’s old shoulders, truly making him feel like a character who has been hardened from his experiences.
